If you’re a mama, you know that finding time for yourself can be very tricky. It can be hard to take that moment to create calm, be conscious, and parent the way you had always hoped.
Almost non-existent at some stages of motherhood…
When you have crying, non-sleeping babies…..
When toddlers are hanging off you like you’re a tree…….
Or when you have older kidlets that ask a million questions (or giving loads of sass!)
How do we still the mind, when so much is happening at once…all of the time!?
Create calm. I believe it can be done.
It’s just not something we have been taught to do, or conditioned to understand this powerful practice.
But mindfulness/ meditation is very POWERFUL, even if you only get in a few minutes each day!
I once read in a book ‘Buddism for mothers’……
Mindfulness can be in the simplest of activities or daily chores.
Rather than creating extra time and space to sit in a crossed legged position chanting OMMMMMM….we just have to come back to the present moment during any activity we perform in the day.
Using all the senses allows our mind to focus in the present moment (rather than on the bazillian things on the to-do list).
Stop for a minute…
* Listen to the sounds around you (name 3 or more)
* Feel the touch of whatever you’re doing (Washing dishes, baby clothes, babies skin, toys, rug on the floor, steering wheel etc etc)
* Take some full belly breaths, and breathe slowly out to the count of 3 a few times
You’ll be amazed how this simple activity can lower your stress levels, re-connect your physicality to the present moment, and allow your body and mind to calm…. even if just for a moment.
Once we are calm and feeling the positive effects of this short mindfulness activity, so too do those around us (including our babies). It allows us to practice conscious parenting.
It’s a simple ripple effect.
Another option is to listen to some guided meditations.
I find these super helpful to switch off, and immerse into the voice and sounds of the meditation.
(this is why we had the beautiful energy healer, Kali Devi, record some gorgeous 5-10minute meditations for our online BABY GLOW & RENEW YOU playbooks. They’ve been created specifically for each trimester and postnatal phase 😉
We listen while we are walking, in the car, making breakfast, breastfeeding etc…
Meditation can be fit into the day and the kids can even benefit from hearing it out loud while you listen.
You have to make meditation work for you and for into your life, and not the other way around.
This way, amongst the chaos of mum life, you can still reap the rewards that this small action can make on your body, mind and soul each day.
